Local teens talk about sex, drugs, violence

Officials from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and area health agencies have released highlights of the 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, in which CMS students report on violence, drinking, drugs, sex and other activities that can put them at risk.

This is the third time local high school students have completed the survey, starting in 2005.

Read the high school highlights here.

Middle school students started doing a more limited version of the survey (for instance, without questions about sex) in 2005.

Read middle school highlights here.

Why are questions about sex left out for middle schoolers? Heck, back in my day they were plenty of middle schoolers having sex (or doing other sexual activities) and that was 20 years ago. Just talking to my neices who are in middle school tells me there is ALOT of sexual activity in the middle schools. What's even more sad is its creeping down into higher grades of elementary as well.

Why not ask questions about sexual behavior?

Well, it's like everything else in the schools.

If you ignore the problems, or can explain them in an appropriately PC manner, they go away.

Or at least you can get funding for the "disabilities" they cause...

I'm just glad we were able to keep all those sexual details about that HUSH HUSH prostitution ring that apparently featured some very prominent Charlotte citizens out of the newspaper. As long as we don't read about prominent politicians and sports figures having sex outside of their marriage, it really isn't happening, right? The only casualty? Skipper Beck. People Like Michael J and Tiger who step out are immune.
