Where should Charlotte 49ers stadium go?

As UNC Charlotte leaders continue to hash out plans over a proposed new football stadium on the campus, new renderings reveal another element to the debate: where exactly to put the facility?

The stadium is slated to be built near the university's Charlotte Research Institute off the North Tryon Street entrance and near the baseball stadium. But the renderings from architects Jenkins-Peer Architects and the DLR Group show leaders still must decide how to orient the stadium.

The options are included in a presentation -- click here to view it-- given to university trustees on the football stadium. The renderings are on pages 5-7 of the presentation.

Chancellor Phil Dubois notes there advantages to each option. For example, putting the stadium between and behind Duke Centennial and Grigg halls -- or option B -- would make the football field more visible from North Tryon street. Meanwhile, many college football stadiums generally follow a north-south orientation, or option C.

Which option do you prefer?

Meanwhile, as an article in today's Observer notes, the architects recently suggested that the campus build a temporary football stadium in the same location it would put the permanent facility. - April Bethea

it shouldn't be built. They need to get better faculty, improve parking, and get a medical school.

How many medical schools do we need in one state?

Option B would be the best. As for Anon 1:41, you may want to speak the big wigs in the UNC system about a medical school. They will tell you that is reserved for Chapel Hill and Charlotte doesn't deserve the chance. Starting in '10, they will building 3 new parking decks adding over 3,000 spaces. I'm sure there are lame duck faculty members but my overall experience through classes has been good.

Having better sports teams as well as better facilities attracts better faculty.

or better yet try and make it an enjoyable side of town to live on. I'm so scared when I'm on that side of town(I'm a woman). All I can think about is some gangster mugging me or worse. Wouldn't want to be a drunk college girl living in that area. Good school, bad neighborhood.

anomymous 2:17 all I can say is I'm glad Ikea moved in to get rid of the riff raff. those swedes are great.

A Medical School? I have never seen 60,000 to 110,000 thousand people gather on Saturdays to spend money at a Medical School. Pull for Duke, they have no football program and a med school.

anonymous 2:19, I don't think that Ikea has done anything to help get the "riff raff" ,out if anything the riff raff adds character to that part of town. Who doesnt want to have their heart rate go up every now and than?

anonymous 2:21 I've never seen 100,000 people attend any NC college sporting event. doubt that is feasible

What about an APP State game I've heard about 120,000 people attend the games during their playoff football games.

once again I agree it's a good school, they just don't have the money the older schools do to throw around.

We don't know if you believe in the real existence of negative or "lower" forces. If you do, then you may be able to understand or relate to some of what we are about to say. It seems that how your "programming" permits you to see or identify those forces, determines the limit of your acceptance or understanding. Many believe that there are "evil" acts or even "evil" individuals, but would draw the line before they would believe in evil spirits, evil discarnates, negative influences, malevolent space aliens, "Luciferians," or Satan and his fallen angels.

There is nothing wrong with the area around UNC Charlotte! The only issues are the Sugar Creek, North Tryon, Derita and Eastland Mall areas (attributed to low-income / low-motivation people that react on their emotions and desires too much)... however those areas are miles away from UNC Charlotte!

The area around UNC Charlotte is just as safe as Uptown and South Charlotte. What is it exactly that makes a woman feel unsafe?

Near the baseball field would be good. I graduated in 1998 and loved my time there. I don't know why UNCC gets such a bad rep. My professors were great. I felt as safe on campus as any other area of Charlotte, but I'm crazy. I use a little common sense and never thought that I was "untouchable" when I was a student. Should you be able to jog alone at night? Of course. Should you do it? NO. And I'd like to see a law school before a medical school. It would be great for the city. I don't know how they let Clt school of law move in ahead of them.

Back on topic here, I love these renditions. It looks like a shovel ready project. Let's get started!!!!

My favorite is the North-South orientation. It keeps the practice fields out of the way and seems to be a better fit with the area.

Anonymous said...

Looks beautiful no matter which way it is oriented.

I'm leaning towards the North-South layout, or secondly the alignment that has the field in line with the traffic circle. But really, they could put it anywhere and I'd be fine with it. Let's just get football.

None. They need to forget this idea entirely.

UNCC should spend money more to the students, scholarships and to improve the quality of the faculty etc. instead of showing-off new football team.
They have a lot of faculty who gets paid very well (around 200K) but does nothing. They look after young faculty from good school but they do not stay long at UNCC. It is true that UNCC wants to grow, but in my opinion they do not know how to grow. First, get rid of those highly paid useless people! They are not interested in education of our future leaders.

Anon 2:25,

I'm an APP fan and only about 30K can get into that stadium, even with standing room only.

The plans for the stadium should go back in the drawer. This town... hell, this paper, only supports UNC-CHAPEL HILL. All of the other UNC schools don't seem to exist, not even here. Sorry, UNC Charlotte. I can't believe the school even tried to get local support from a town that could care less about the school. But the good news is that UNC CHAPEL HILL sucks in football so the town of Charlotte could eventually support the program. Bad news is that no one would know since this paper only writes about Chapel Hill. This paper sucks. Go bankrupt already.
