Watch CMS boundary talks online

The topic was controversial, the crowds huge and the discussion complex. With parents across the city doing a postmortem on Tuesday night's school board meeting, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has posted video of the meeting online. (Oops -- due to technical problems with the archiving company CMS is using for its first-ever online viewing of meetings, these postings were delayed. The first segment went up around 3:30 p.m.; others will link up throughout the afternoon.)

The board spent more than three hours hearing presentations on options for shifting students from Myers Park to East Mecklenburg high schools, and for reducing crowding at Eastover Elementary using boundary changes and/or building swaps with nearby magnets.

Board members had plenty of comments and questions. They took no formal votes, but a majority agreed not to pursue a proposal that would have reassigned the Cotswold Elementary zone from Alexander Graham Middle and Myers Park to McClintock Middle and East Meck.

Administrators say they'll quickly launch community meetings to discuss the remaining proposals.

I really think moving the IB magnet makes the most sense. East Meck is a stable enough school to support the program. They could probably support it internally, without the magnet students. The staff is strong, and the school at large would benefit from the funding and training to implement the program. MPHS has had the magnet for how long? time to share the wealth on that one. If a parent doesn't want to follow the magnet (ostensibly their reason for being @ MPHS) they can go back to their home schools.

I think it's hilarious that after cms spent big $ relaunching their website...they still can't seem to post a simple video online...Stop overcomplicating everything. It's called Youtube!

CMS through the farthest east section of District 3 under the bus. We were assigned to go to Butler and now we're stuck going to the "No Mint Hill" high school as they needed some white folks (less than 18% student population) or it would be 100% low performing and high poverty. This school will be a Title One school in 2 years and CMS legacy of screwing up communities will remain intact. Since the f'ed up so bad in District 3, they wouldn't dare do it again at Myers park. I hate CMS.

IB must be real expensive or every high school would have this program. Providing it only through magnet schools drains other schools of many strong students. IB in every high school would be the best way to keep good students in their home school. Magnets are great for some, but at the expense of others. However, CMS just doesn't have the demographics to keep redrawing the lines...too many families will make other choices one way or another to avoid attending a lot of schools.

Didn't East Meck's problems start when Providence High opened? I thought many EM students were reassigned to Providence, especially from growth areas. No one has talked about the capacity or demographics at Providence. What is the possibility of redrawing those lines? Wouldn't it be good to have more strong families at EM that weren't in IB? CMS must have decided they can't get those families so they'll go after Myers Park, which is much more diverse than Providence.

I wonder how many people do not realize that East Meck already has the IB program and has for years.

Thanks 9:32 for pointing out E Meck already has an IB program. I continue to be amazed at the depth of ignorance most of the public has about CMS. I do not know if that is CMS's fault, the CO's fault or just who. I was at a presentation last night about the District 1 candidates adn I amazed how little two of them knew how CMS worked now.
