Report back taxes to credit agencies?

Mecklenburg County Tax Collector Neal Dixon says he is considering reporting delinquencies to credit agencies if the tactic is found to be legally viable.

The idea is among several outlined in a newly released memo addressing concerns that more than 1,000 property owners have unpaid tax bills at least eight years old.

Among the other proposals to collect the unpaid $6.6 million in back taxes:

- Equipping tax collectors with more mapping software to locate properties.

- More marketing to raise awareness of delinquent taxpayers.

- Streamlining how the county identifies bidders for foreclosed properties.

Dixon notes the county's tax collection rate exceeds 99.35% for one-year delinquencies, and 99.90% within 10 years. (Each year, the county collects more than $1.3 billion.)

But County Commissioner Bill James asked for the report on back taxes after someone complained about an uptown condominium owner who hadn't paid property taxes for 12 years.

Reporting delinquencies to credit agencies is a good idea. Only those owing over $6,000 should be reported so that those recently having bad luck have time to get the money. $6,000 would be about three years property taxes on an average priced home.

Need a program like that for lawmakers(rangel, most of obamas cohorts) who don't pay taxes as well.

Government already puts unpaid taxes on your credit report. Whenever a tax lien is filed, it shows up on your credit report.

Trust me, I know.

One place I've lived turned them over to a private collection agency after a certain time and the fees charged back to the tax collector's budget so he has an incentive to collect before it goes out for collection.
