With Obama's speech to schoolchildren stirring up a political fury among adults, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced today that Superintendent Peter Gorman and other top officials will visit schools to watch the historic webcast.

Some who oppose the speech have been buzzing over whether the district's official "encouragement" for schools to participate means whole schools can opt out.
The answer is no: All schools will show the speech live, but parents who object can contact their child's school and another "instructional opportunity" will be provided.
School board member Larry Gauvreau responded to the announcement by e-mailing his own proposed alternative: "I call on students, staff and Mecklenburg citizens to reject the Obama administration's pandering and any attempt by CMS to legitimize the Sept 8th event. Instead, teachers and students should consider reading a good book during that time period."

It is nice to see that most of these comments support letting kids watch our President encourage them. Those parent who fear "indoctrination" must feel that their kids' minds are pretty weak and/or that the values they teach at home are so ineffective that their kids will go another way based on a few minutes of exposure to President Obama. Crosby, Stills & Nash had an old song -- one line was, "Children teach your parents well." Most of our kids are open to difference -- maybe they can teach their parents something. I too am ashamed that our so many in our country are acting with such ignorance and irrationality. Some accuse Obama of arrogance -- if he is, at least he has some substance behind it. Arrogance it bad; the arrogance of the ignorant is so much worse.

The truth is we are so disgusted by his performance, that we cant even stand to see him on TV, much less have my kids have to watch. His strongly disapprove rating has grown 20% since he took office as the majority of Americans disapprove or strongly disapprove of his performance.... He has lost our trust quickly by not listening to us and putting his agenda, not ours first. My kids will not have to politely pretend that he is worth their respect, so they will not see him. I myself am a teacher who has been asked to show this speech. I have no problem showing a speech just as I have no problem showing a movie or documentary in class. I will however never show a movie or documentary that I have not first seen, yet I am being made to show a speech and provide a lesson plan for something I cannot view before my students. I think this puts teachers in a potentially tough situation as we have students from various walks of life and with parents who have political views from both ends of the spectrum. Couple that with many of the comments I have seen ranging from racist and socialist to redneck or radical and it appears that we as educators have been put in a lose, lose situation regardless of the way you view our President or the political party you affiliate yourself with.
I believe that children should be exposed to our governmental efforts and the efforts of our president. However if children become the next group he rallies for support of a partisan political agenda, it should be stopped. My thought would be to record president Obama's talk, have educational experts, e.g. teachers, administrators, and perhaps a group of interested parents, preview it and then show it to groups of children if it is worthy. What children watch in school should have an educational purpose. What will the children learn from this? Is what they will learn important to their education? Any good teacher would preview video programming before showing it to a group of children anyway. This should not be any different.

The bottom line....what is our schools' purpose and who are we making decisions for? Who is important here.......the children. Make your decisions, not for your own political agenda's but for the well being of our children. Before they watch Obama, there should be a specific educational goal and specific information that the children should be accountable for. If nothing of the speech is worthy of that, then forget it. If you can't establish any goals, then record it. If it is worth watching, there will be definite objectives that the children should accomplish by watching it and the information they are expected to gain will be factual and meaningful, not political opinions. If it is a pep talk without any hidden agendas then HOORAY!!! Kids need that kind of encouragement. If one cannot gain any of these things from watching it, then it is a waste of time. Perhaps children should learn about how individuals who have gone before us earned our freedom and the right to debate such things.

Some people in America and America itself is finally showing its true colors. People can try to now use words like Socialism and Communist as a back drop to what it really is which is racism. Why, you might ask I say this. Well, first.. This country is a socialist country and has been for a long time. We are more socialist than capitalist because we depend on our government more than we depend on ourselves. For instance, the Bush stimulus.. I don't think anyone whose complaining about Obama has sent back that money.. Socialism.. Medicare... Socialism... VA Hospital... Socialism... Unemployment benefits.. Socialism... Public Schools..Socialism.. the list goes on and on.. And what if the government woke up one day and said we are not going to subsidize anything else. Where would all of those phony hypocrites whose shouting Socialism would be?.. I tell you where at the front of the line asking why have my government forsaken me.. The Obama foul cry is simply Racism but that is OK.. Because I will enjoy the fruits of his hard labor while you wallow in you deep seated hated of not the man but his skin color.
I think the political bickering in this country will destroy our great nation....a president talking to students is nothing to be partisan about. There are substantive issues that those who aspire to politics need to focus on. Republicans are mad and becuz they loose the election will do everything to ensure that none of Obama's platform succeed. Know that it will take years b4 any republican is ever elected to the presidency.
They should also show a rebuttal by Sarah Palin to tell children that it is not important for them to study hard and stay in school. That would make it fair and balanced.
Reagan's speech to students was much worse that what Obama has planned
On November 14, 1988, President Reagan addressed and took questions from students from four area middle schools in the Old Executive Office Building. The speech was broadcast live and rebroadcast by C-Span, and Instructional Television Network fed the program “to schools nationwide on three different days.”
In his speech to students and the question and answer session following Reagan
1. stressed the importance of low taxes and free trade.
2. stressed the importance of religion in our nation.
3 touted the economic achievements of his administration ,
4.put in a plug for the line item veto,
5. told the students that lowering taxes increases revenue
6. boasted of his administrations aid to Negro colleges
7. and told students that if guns were banned, burglars would be "celebrating forevermore"

If I believed the President would ONLY tell the children to do good in school and be good little children I would have no problem letting my child watch. However, he seems to want to use every opportunity to push anyone he can with his Healthcare Reform and other issues. My child doesn't need to hear that.
A sad statistic regarding the horde of parents complaining about this upcoming speech......most claim to be college graduates, including Larry. Some people will do anything for 15 minutes of fame! I encourage everyone to listen to the speech made by OUR president!
Open Letter to Dr. Gorman and the Charlotte Board of Education
Dear Dr. Gorman and Members of the Board of Education:
Please allow me to introduce myself as a native Charlottean, a South Mecklenburg High School Graduate, and a parent of two children in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.
My family and I were enjoying a nice Labor Day weekend when we received an Ed-Connect Call from Dr. Furr at South Mecklenburg High School. In this recorded message we were informed that our daughter would have to watch the President's Address on Tuesday at 1:30 PM, that there would be a classroom exercise based on goal setting that was inspired by the President's address, and that this exercise would be graded.
We were also informed that we, as parents, had the right to excuse our children from the address, but that the child was still responsible for the goal setting and the grade - even if they missed Tuesday as a whole.
The purpose of my letter to you all is to express my concern over a classroom exercise that is graded based on the goal setting associated with this speech. Growing up in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system I had the privilege of seeing many Presidents who came to Charlotte. I do not recall ever having to be graded for a civics exercise such as this. Also, I understand that President George W. Bush did a similar address in 2001. Did that include a graded exercise as well?
I do not have a problem with the President trying to inspire young minds. Every President has tried to do this since John F. Kennedy. Nor do I object to goal setting exercises. Goal setting is a great life skill. However, political ideology, like religion, is personal and has no place in the classroom. To insist upon a graded activity such as this gives the appearance of indoctrination and should not have been considered.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg is a great school system with a busy year. Tests and other activities that are required for academic advancement and education are being placed on hold for this and have the potential to thwart the momentum that is emerging in the new school year.
As a concerned parent, I ask that you drop the graded aspects of this requirement and lets move on to have a successful school year.

Masturbation Saves Lives
How naive of people to think Obama just wants to tell the kids to study hard and stay in school. Why doesn't he give his speech to the parents ,whose job it is to raise the kids, and give them the values and morals they need to be productive--and leave the children out of his further "campaigning". He (Obama) is so full of himself,he thinks he can start his indoctrination of youth even earlier than all the politically blind 18 year-olds he appealed to via cell phone during his campaign.
I he weren't cut from the cloth of Che Gueverra and Castro, it would be a non-issue.
People are just fed up with his undermining of all things America. I remind everyone who has posted here that this country is NOT a democracy, and that our system of government creates equal opportunity for all. It just doesn't gurantee equal results, which i9s what Socialism is all about.
Think about it for a second - how hard would you work if you KNEW that no matter what, you'd never get ahead?
People have to make up their minds as to what is important - having what you feel you're "entitled to" and using the police power of government to take it away from the hard workers and "spread it around", or having the freedom to choose what it is you want to achieve and not have a government in the way of you chasing your own dreams. I'll go with the latter.
BHO has roused a sleeping giant in the country in the form of the silent majority - the conservative leaning white independent voter. If he's not careful, his methodology, ideaologies, and choice of friends will doom not only him and his presidency, but will deal a blow to the left and the Democratic Party that will persist for a generation or more.
After looking at the U.S. BOE web site, it is clear to me that the menu of classroom activities is meant to cast the most favorable light upon the President himself and not necessarily on the importance of education and personal responsibility. Given how tainted and disgraced many of our elected "leaders" have become, I am extremely uncomfortable with any attempts in our school system to indoctrinate our children in what some would like us to believe is the infallibility and sincerity of our leaders...based solely on the positions of those officials and their words.
But what do I know anyway? I am just a right-wing redneck undeducated extremist....with an M.D.
As for the typical liberal blogger, just like my exwife, they are never one to let the facts get in the way of the argument.
This is likely the tip of the iceberg, compiled by one CMS parent from emails, posts, and news reports: One principal tells me CMS does not require that students watch, only encourages, but that his school WILLl have the students watch this "historic" event unless opted out. Another principal tells me nothing she has seen from CMS would allow her NOT to require her kids to watch unless opted out. Checking the website for both schools shows NO information whatever about how the particular school is handling the details of Obama's address and associated course work. Teachers at one school do an in-class poll of students opting out by raising hands, and those opting out are called racists by other students. Parents get a Connect-Ed call from a high school over the weekend stating that graded course work will be assigned based on the address, and will be required even if students opted out of watching. We are left waiting and wondering if this will be a requirement at all schools that will be sprung on our children at the last moment. Nothing on the school's web site about how the Obama address and course work is being handled. Principals from both the schools I have kids at selectively answer questions I pose in email, not fully answering questions important to me as a parent. Reviewing the SLC website reveals no details about the Obama address, our schools, and CMS requirements. Area Superintendent's name has not been updated. Nor is the purpose of the SLC explained anywhere. http://pages.cms.k12.nc.us/lcsouth/ Update--Discovered there are TWO websites for the SLC, but neither have information about the address, but the newer page does have the updated super's name. Wow, staff of ten and no one can answer my questions by email. Six times I've asked the SLC super what his and CMS directives are concerning the Obama address and he refuses to answer by email. http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/lc/south/Pages/default.aspx Ann Clark offers that she has only encouraged schools to participate in watching the address, and that watching is not required. Other directives evidently from CMS and press releases say that students WILL watch the address. Pete Gorman and others evidently are refusing to answer questions until after the address. CMS administrators are making a media circus and media op of the address by going to many different schools and inviting press to take pictures, video, and report on them watching the address with the students. Did I mention its bad precedent to give any politician or any government official, no matter what the message, a megaphone to the kids in our local school system? Why is it that CMS seems to be the only school system in the area requiring students to watch the address, while others leave it to teachers in each class to decide if the address is appropriate for their curriculum, with kids being able to opt out? Why is CMS pushing to the extreme to require students to watch, with an opt out? If Obama were a real statesman, truly interested in the kids, he'd cancel this controversial address and devise perhaps a more appropriate way to motivate students. If Pete Gorman were truly interested in the education and warefare of the students, he would at minimal echo the directives that other area schools systems have issued with regards to Obama's address.
Shame on Larry Gavreau- He IS the President of the United States. Unbelievable!
