View school-by-school rest results from CMS

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools improved in nearly every category in this year's North Carolina tests, CMS officials announced Wednesday morning. Here are the full results provided by CMS.

No. 1 - Here's the presentation Superintendent Peter Gorman gave at today's news conference. He suggested using 2009 results without retests as a fair comparison with previous years, while the higher pass rates with retests will be used going forward:

No. 2 - Here's the total pass rate for each high school on End-of-Course exams given at the end of 10 English, math, science and social studies classes. These results are comparable to previous years because there was no retesting. Marie G. Davis Military Academy was not open in 2007-08.

Read the EOC composite scores, for high schools

No. 3 - Here are results of each subject at CMS high schools, with results broken down by race, family income, students with disabilities (EC) and students with limited English proficiency (LEP). Students who qualify for lunch subsidies are considered economically disadvantaged. "lt6" means fewer than six students in a category took the exam; CMS does not report results for such small groups.

Read the EOC scores, by subject

No. 4 - Here's how each CMS elementary and middle school fared on reading and math, given in grades 3-8, and science exams, given only in grades 5 and 8, along with a composite pass rate for all three subjects. The 2009 proficiency rate -- the percent who scored at or above grade level -- includes results before and after the retesting.

hmmmm..Garringer went from a 45% to an 82% this year? Something smells sour in this equation....I can see a 10% point leap, but almost 40%? No way!!
Kudos to Ardrey Kell on being at the top of the heap on the southside!

Kudos??? They have 0% free and reduced lunch. It should have been 100%.

Better check those scores again. I think Providence is higher than AK this year.

95.1 vs. 95.2? I think the demographics at AK and Providence speak for themselves...it was a dead tie for top dog scores.

How messed up is it that all the scores that are minority scores are far below average. Those kids are so far behind, and need so much. But the schools in the better parts of Charlotte are at 95%. Doesn't anyone else see a problem with this???? These kids at these other schools deserve to get just as good of an education. This is very sad

Ardrey Kell does not have 0% free and reduced lunch. Check your stats!

"Doesn't anyone else see a problem with this???? These kids at these other schools deserve to get just as good of an education. This is very sad" Yes, I see the problem, the thing is the schools can't fix bad parents who don't care and produce kids who don't care!

I teach at a low income, urban middle school and just for the record...the parents do care and the students work hard. And while you seem to believe that the playing field is level, please guess again! how many field trips to enrich your child's learning did your child's school go on, our school: none. How many classroom sets of novels does your child get to encounter in order to understand how great writing looks and simply to have access to good books, my school: 15 in an entire school. How many months did your child lose access to the school library due to testing, my students: 4 out of 9. Do you see a level playing field, no! If you don't know what's going on don't be quick to ASSume that you know, our parents have just as much dedication to their children's success. This statement was so off base and rings with tones of racism. You wanna fix CMS, bring back busing or make placement based on socioeconomic mix like in Wake County (where they consistently outperform even the top schools in our district based on EOG and SAT scores). Allow students from disadvantaged homes to see another side of living, learn from the "privileged children whose parents care" (see Vygotsky's theory of social learning), get them away from the neighborhoods that hinder them and are cancers to their learning while at the same time exposing the advantaged children and their parents to the inner city schools that need their presence as well to provide balance. I gaurantee that if you check the achievement gap prior to the end of busing you will see that CMS has regressed instead of progressed. And oh yeah, the learning communities...the biggest joke in education since No Child Left Behind!

thank Larry Gavreau for ending bussing in CMS. That is why school scores are so uneven across the district.

I agree CMS can learn a lot from Wake. My sisters children attend school in Wake, are black males and are consistently above grade level in their classes. My children should be afforded the same opportunities. I know the teachers are working hard and some parents as well but as an educator myself, I know some parents expect it to be healed at the doorstep of the school house rather than their house.

Congrats to such a wonderful improvement @ POB! Their scores may not top some of the others but what an accomplishment in the last year! I was very concerned about their scores prior to my son attending this year but I do not regret that decision @ all!! What a wonderful program they have! Congrats to the great job Principal Fennoy has done there!

Has anyone bothered to look at the number of students that took the test? West Meck didn't test 1/2 of the freshamn & sophomore claases- no wonder they showed growth! Rules should be made so that composite scores include the % of eligible students tested is reflected. Schools cheat!!!!

Well of course CMS cooked the books because now that everything is suddenly hunky dory Gorman has an excuse for laying off 2000 employees that included 600 teachers and the administrators wont have to take pay cuts but instead may get a bonus afterall. We know figs dont lie but liars can fig.
Its called covering your own azz... Its not easy making those big million dollar crib payments to live in luxury and drive big cadillacs ...diamond in the back sun roof top diggin the scene with a gangsterline ohhh ohhh .. gangster whitewalls tv antenna in the back ...

Administrators including the downtown big shots and all overpaid principals and assist prins cannot and willnot lower standards of living for anybody ...

I don't think the low income are getting a bad education it is just that the kids at the high income school are educated at home every day and it makes school much easier.

It is proven that the home environment and parents are the number one impact on a child's success and the next one is the teacher. A teacher can only do so much though for a child who doesn't have any support or background.

I think you missed the point about ending busing. The kids you see failing now would have been failing anyway; you just would not have known. Anyway, when ABC testing started just coincident to the end of busing, and with NCLB, you would still have not known. Anyway, CMS's strategy of addressing these kids is far more successful that Wake's approach.

Without national uniform standardized testing, these scores are absolutely meaningless.

How does CMS compare to other school districts across the country apples to apples? How does CMS compare to area private and charter schools?

A recent Queens University Study showed that Wake County high poverty students scored no better than CMS high poverty students--in fact, their scores were lower in some cases. Yes, Wake had no huge discrepencies between schools, but that's because school scores were an average of high and low scorers. As in Charlotte under busing, the achievement gap is masked by busing.
For those who want to return to busing here, one might ask, "If busing was so successful, why do we still have such a huge poverty problem? Why do we have so many parents who do not know how to help their children. Weren't the parents of today's students educated under busing?

OK folks...you need to look deeper into some of these scores. Check and see how many schools now offer Alg 1 A and B. These schools put lower performing students in those classes so they don't have to take the test.....and the scores go up! Check and see what schools put kids in Literacy instead of English 1. Again, some schools hide their students. Greenhouse Biology is a place to hide the Biology kids. Oceanography is a place to hide the Chemistry kids. This is a shell game for some of these schools. Look at Garringer growth. Does Garringer now offer those courses? You can bet they do. Check that out Ann Doss Helms. Did deeper dear. Pete shows growth cause they cook the offerings at 95% of these high schools. He knows they do it too. Signed anonymously for fear of firing!

It is true about how the test scores can be manipulated. The high school I teach at does not play the game. All freshmen take Biology. All 10th graders take Civics & Economics and other EOC required tests. Our scores show it. Frankly, I am tired of teaching to the test. The pressure on EOC teachers is unbelievable. I do nothing in my classroom that is not "for the test." Therefore I do NO real world consumer economics which kids really need. There is nothing about credit cards and the results of misusing them on the test. And our principal gives no break to EOC teachers. We had the highest number of students and largest classes. Look for a mass exodus to better performing schools next spring if we can transfer!
