NASCAR court fight: Did driver inhale fumes?

Suspended for failing a drug test, driver Jeremy Mayfield said he "inhaled fumes from a fiery wreck in the Talledega race," according to more court papers filed in the battle between Mayfield and NASCAR.

Mayfield was indefinitely suspended May 9 for failing a random drug test conducted May 1 at Richmond International Raceway. He filed suit to overturn his suspension on May 29.

In legal papers obtained Monday, a response by NASCAR drug testing firm Aegis Labs said a doctor asked Mayfield if he had taken any diet medications or inhalers, specifically, Vick’s Inhaler. Mayfield said he had not, the papers say.

Doctors said in the documents that they agreed with Mayfield's account from an earlier suit that in a subsequent phone call Mayfield said "he was in a fiery wreck while competing in the Talledega race in late April .... and inhaled a large amount of fumes."

The Talledega race was in late April, prior to Richmond.

NASCAR on Friday filed a countersuit, which claims Mayfield's admission of using attention deficit disorder drug Adderall without informing NASCAR - and his use of the drug at unsafe levels - violated the substance abuse policy. That violation would be in addition to an undisclosed illegal drug that showed up in his Richmond test. The name of the illegal drug was blacked out throughout the court documents.

Somewhat off topic, but I wonder if exposure to all the toxic stuff at a racetrack affects the health of pitcrews and other people close to the action. I cringe everytime I see a cloud of brake dust explode in the face of a tire changer.

Ummmm... Who cares. They do it at there own free will.

One thing about a drug addict, they will come up with every excuse in the book to deny they have a problem. It looks like Mayfield is just doing that. Also, just the admission that he was taking a medicine and taking more than prescribed is enough to ban him. I hope he is banned for life.

The black out drug in question is being reported as Meth....by ESPN...

Now it's getting pathetic. Does he think even if he wins NASCAR will ever allow him back? They are a private company and do not have to allow him to race.

I have heard that Obama was going to take control of NASCAR. The government was going to regulate the cars, and mandate fuel mileage.

Fumes and smoke is why I like NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing!! Nothing Like The Smell Of John Force's Nitromethane and Goodyear tire smoke on a Sunday Morning from a real champions funny car.

Enough excuses. Seriously. No fumes on the track would register as drugs in your system. Sorry. Give it up.

The fumes must be why they can't figure out how to do anything other than turn left for 4 hours, or figure out how to drive in the rain.

I don't know if it's possible or not. I'd think the court would have people who do.

It's all Busch's fault!

People take more than prescribed all the time. My doctor actually told me to double up on my allergy meds at certain times of the year even tho he can't prescribe it that way. I think allergy meds is one of the things Mayfield says he was taking. Also, some OTC l sprays like Xicam can register wrong.

If you research adderall on the web it has meth chemicals for ADD. He never was busted for any other drug. Hope it sticks it to NASCAR.

Any driver who has trouble paying attention should be banned. I think I saw him on I-77 the other day, driving in the left lane.

A lot of people (particularly in this comment section) are making a lot of assumptions about Mayfield. I doubt we will ever know all of the facts.

Fumes from a wreck about a month earlier? Sorry, no Jeremy. Seems you just might be a redn...an addict.

This whole thing is stupid. He took Adderall. People who are saying he is endangering other drivers don't have a clue about what they are talking about. Adderall helps you concentrate. Just go to a college campus and ask about it. Over half the college kids in the nation do it.

He inhaled someting! Piss on him.

Funny, we all inhale stuff every day. Can't get by without it. We have little to no control over what is in the air we breath. Maybe noone deserves to race. That would be quite boring. Retest him and keep him on a watch list.

And the same research will show that Adderall is one of the most abused ADD/ADHD drugs on the street. FAIL, Next !!

Another post from the cheap seats. Check out the warning that is given with every Rx for Adderall (and every amphetamine drug for that matter)

Let’s do the math…..high on amphetamines, going around track at 200 mph, surrounded by thousands of people.

Yeah, thanks for playing……

WARNING
AMPHETAMINES HAVE A HIGH POTENTIAL FOR ABUSE. ADMINISTRATION OF AMPHETAMINES FOR PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME MAY LEAD TO DRUG DEPENDENCE AND MUST BE AVOIDED. PARTICULAR ATTENTION SHOULD BE PAID TO THE POSSIBILITY OF SUBJECTS OBTAINING AMPHETAMINES FOR NONTHERAPEUTIC USE OR DISTRIBUTION TO OTHERS, AND THE DRUGS SHOULD BE PRESCRIBED OR DISPENSED SPARINGLY.
MISUSE OF AMPHETAMINE MAY CAUSE SUDDEN DEATH AND SERIOUS CARDIOVASCULAR ADVERSE EVENTS.
