Cogdell: 'Odd' that Jones would audit himself

County Commissioner Harold Cogdell questions why top county managers sit on a committee charged with monitoring the performance of management.

Cogdell's comments earlier this week came after the audit review committee updated the full board on its latest findings.

The panel found that managers reacted appropriately to allegations of impropriety at the Department of Social Services.

At issue is whether County Manager Harry Jones and General Manager John McGillicuddy should be members of the audit panel. DSS Director Mary Wilson reports to Jones.

"It seems odd to me that our county manager and an assistant county manager who reports to our county manager would be a part of a committee to make a determination about whether management responded appropriately," Cogdell said. "It undermines to some extent the appearance of what this committe is charged with having done."

Commissioner Dan Murrey said the committee will address the matter.

Why would you put the defendants on the jury, in other words.

Damn that hate mongering Charlotte Observer and Cogdell bunch of racists. The IRS allows taxpayers to audit themselves dont they?

Obviously if the county manager had found any improprities in his self-audit he would have reported himself to the police and district attorney right?

Thats why we allow students to grade themselves up through college or higher.

You even grade your SAT.

We need trust. We dont need hate monger racist 2nd guessing.

Really, Harry Jones investigating himself for $150,000 in our money that vanished? Wanna bet not one govt blood sucking tick will not be held accountable? Wanna bet this rag will not do any real investigative journalism?

This is not the first time that Jones has showed his incompetence. This guy is overpaid, underperforms, and is as arrogant as they come. fire him and move on!

Mr. Jones should absolutely be held accountable, up to and including his termination if deemed appropriate by an OUTSIDE investigation. No citizen above the age of 8 would believe it appropriate to investigate yourself for misappropriation of funds. PLEASE! It may not seem like alot of money to politicians, but those of us footing the bill see it as 2-3 teaching jobs saved for a year. Commissioners, do the right thing, call for an outside investigation by the SBI, and take appropriate disciplinary action if necessary. That is how those of us in the adult world deal with thieves.

This is just silly. Does the bank president take the fall if a teller steals? The reality is you react to any internal control that needs tightening up and put controls in place so that it does not happen again.

Facts?:

Harry Jones hires national recruiting firm to find new DSS director paying them 10's of thousands of your tax dollars.

Harry rejects candidates offered by said recruiting firm in favor of unemployed attorney and fellow church member, Mary Wilson.

Wilson takes charge of DSS and funnels $25,000.00 toward hers and Jones church, via a shell op organization, to "redecorate: her office.

Wilson then hires fellow unemployed attorney, and fellow member of hers and Jones' church, Samara Foxx (with no experience) to a six figure job as "assistant" director of DSS.

Samara Foxx and Harry Jones funnel additional funds to their church under the guise of "office re-decoration".

Wilson then hires several more unemployed members of hers and Jones' church (with no experience) to head other divisions of DSS.

Wilson then directs 10's of thousands more dollars towards hers and Jones' church under the guise of a "holiday celebration" for employees.

10's of thousands of dollars "missing" from DSS leaked to the press followed by feigned outrage from Wilson and Jones, who immediately set up a committee to explore the missing funds, headed by Jones, Wilson, and lackeys thereof.

Jones deflects growing interest in the above bny saying DSS errors happened prior to the appointment of unemployed attorney, and fellow church member, Mary Wilson, and says he takes full responsibility for DSS errors.

Report issued regarding DSS accounting errors, approved by the committe headed by Harry Jones and DSS director Mary Wilson, is "inconclusive" yet admits lax accounting.

Commissioner Cogdell has the stones to admit, in public, that something about this whole thing stinks.
