WH memo: Manhattan flyover bungled

The Air Force One photo shoot that startled New Yorkers last month was the result of 'structural and organizational ambiguities' at the White House Military Office, according to an internal federal review.

On top of that, the shoot (above) cost taxpayers $328,835.

The Military Office director, Louis Caldera, resigned Friday. The federal report says Caldera had no idea the photo op called for the aircraft to fly at 1,000 feet. The purpose of the flight was to update the official photo of Air Force One.

After the flight, Caldera was in the West Wing when he learned that the flight reminded people of 9/11, the report says.

Paper Trail typically sticks to documents behind local stories, but we'll make an exception for this one. It's a rare glimpse into a communication breakdown at the highest level. - Doug Miller

Ambiguity? Ambiguity!?!

No. A major f*ckup is what this was.

The Military Office's director, under Bush, was an active duty Navy Admiral. The Obama administration turned the office into a patronage position and filled it with a hack. (Sound like the White House Travel Office scandal?)

Had that Navy Admiral been there none of this would have happened.

The photo issued is awful to say the least. It shows that this was NOT a photo op. What was it? Maybe someone was trying to be funny - as in, we do not believe there really was a 8/11. That would be appropo for the WH thinking at this stage of the game. The one to be fired should have been Obama. They are calling the plane AirForce1 and everyone knows it is not AirForce1 unless the pres is on it!

Not the last of many to come bone-headed moves from the messiahs administration. Nor will he be the last sacrificial lamb.

at least they didn't take a Military Helicopter, fly it onto an aircraft carrier for a Mission Accomplished Photo-op at about the same cost

For $328,000 Michelle Obama could have bought at least a dozen new pairs of sneakers!!

WOW! A mistake was made, the mistake was admitted, and the person who made the mistake faced up to the consequences of his actions. A refreshing change from the previous administration. I'm not looking for perfection from the Presidency, but I am looking for accountability.

If you wish to leave a stupid comment, don't do it anonymously. Give us the opportunity to find out who you are so we can ridicule you ad infinitum.

To label those that voted for Obama as racist is complete lunacy, which is exactly what the neocons have been for quite some time: racist lunatics. The same tactics and divisiveness will cause you all to continue to lose elections and popularity. Thanks!

Yes, the civilian in this post screwed up, however, the 747 in the picture never leaves without
consent from higher channels. Also, the photo op was intentionally kept from the NYC mayor and police chief.

So a few people in NY got scared. Who cares.

This photo "op" could have (and should have!) been Photoshopped for less than $100

A "photo shoot that startled New Yorkers" doesn't reveal much of anything important, because it wasn't important.

The "communication breakdown" was about a public relations photo shoot among the people responsible for the President's transportation. I'm glad the "higher ups" know they have more important things to worry about.
