Feds seek CMS assignment info

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has until Jan. 7 to provide federal civil-rights investigators with student-assignment policies and demographic data related to 2011 school closings and other changes, according to a notice sent by the U.S. Education Department's Office of Civil Rights this week.

Click here to read the notice.

Seven people - the department does not identify them - have filed complaints alleging that CMS's recent decision to close schools and otherwise reassign students discriminates on the basis of race or national origin. CMS officials acknowledge that most students whose schools will close are black, Hispanic and/or low-income, but they say closings were based on low enrollment and/or academic problems, not race.

wow.... political correctness might trump common sense. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

It seems like the decisions regarding the closings were based exclusively on geography, enrollment numbers and finances ...

how ironic that the people who somehow think the decisions were racist are the ones who perpetuate the bigotry and hatred by throwing all the kids in the county under the bus yet again -- as the district has done for the past three decades ... by making it political instead of educational.

why is it that a complaint from a black person gets immediate attention and the "New Black Panthers" thing gets nada?

12:00, becasue this is the "new" America they voted for. Not to mention is this the same racial "justice" department that told the Democrat voters in Kinston NC that they are too stupid and they need the demcrat identifier behind the name of the candidate even this town voted to not have the candidates identified by party. PS, Kinston is a largely black town.

Mark my words, they are going to have to keep these schools open b/c these folks will get their way, and it will end up affecting the kids/parents/families that are acutally trying to do the right thing. Anytime someone of color cries discrimination, everyone cowers and changes their minds! I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you want to blame someone for the poor state your kids' schools are in start blaming the person in the mirror or your next door neighbor. Your neighborhood schools are bad because YOU chose to let them get that way by not teaching your children to value education and respect authority. You get back what you put in! GET OVER IT!!!!!!

Big Brother comrade Obama and Co.

And they filed a lawsuit against AZ over illegals where the drug war is spilling over.

They filed against BP. The list goes on.

See who is running the show.

So what will happen here? Will they keep these schools open and then close down the few predominately white schools that exist. How is it any different? Oh wait...because it's white students.

Wow, that diversity thing is really working out well. We'll be importing Caucasian students before long. Do away with the special funding for the underachievers and make them live in the real world. Stop the perks, stop the insanity, and start being personally responsible.

Why not let the IRS do an audit on these filthy worthless scum filing these fake crybaby phony lawsuits to see how much in taxes they have ever paid?

ZERO ??

You all so blinded by bigotry that you failed to understand and comprehend the information in the document. No where did it indicate the race of the six individuals filing the complaint. Further, this is more an issue of failing to make decisions that benefit the whole of CMS, not just the schools that are located in the white areas, but the "tracking" and placement of non-white students is an issue as well.

The bottom line here is the powers that be should have considered the fact that all of the school closures were in under-served areas, and that there are other schools that should have been considered. Moreover, someone should be monitoring the amount of minority students that are placed in special education, non-college preparatory courses, etc. So that the statistically imbalance can be detected and analyzed.

Having once taught in the Charlotte area, and being the only African-American teacher at my school, I witnessed a lot of this bigotry first hand. The mentality of the people responding to this post and many of the others on the Observer site is the main reason my husband and I decided that Charlotte, full of its small minded, racist, red-necks is no place to raise our children. It is not being politically correct to ensure equality amongst the schools in this Godforsaken place, it is called being sensitive to the needs of these precious children who are going to grow up and need jobs and educational opportunities so that they can be productive citizens.

I am a student in CMS. I see everyday what happens in the school. Yes i am blessed enough to go a very good school. However, most of the kids in the closing schools are going to go to their new school and do the same thing. Sleep, skip class, and not care. And yet their parents are all up in arms over the school closing. Maybe if the parents were more concerned about their children and less about what the school board does than the schools wouldnt be closing in the first place.
