See Duke's tax filing, including Coach K's salary

The News & Observer of Raleigh posted Duke's tax filing, dated last month. Among the revelations:
  • Coach Mike Krzyzewski's compensation topped $4.19 million during the 2008-09 fiscal year. That appears to make him the highest-paid college coach in the nation. And that was before the Blue Devils won the national championship.
  • Duke has raised the pay of its football coach in an attempt to jump-start its lagging football program. New coach David Cutcliffe, who was hired in December 2007, is paid three times as much as his predecessor.
  • Duke athletic director Kevin White was paid more than $400,000 in fiscal 2008-09.]
Read the N&O's complete story here.

You can also read a PDF copy of Duke's filing here. Compensation information for athletics officials is on Page 55 of the PDF.

Why do we care? Duke is a private institution...This isn't news. The only people who care are 1) The government - aka the people who want all of our money, 2) maybe the parents/students who pay Duke, and 3) those who make donations to Duke via alumni/booster associations. I happen to be in both 2) and 3) since I haven't paid off my student loans, and you know what, I could care less. This is a waste of space. The rest of NC doesn't care how Duke spends its money.

It's good that our universities emphasize sports and entertainment.

That's exactly where we will lead the world in just a few short years.

Hard to believe that Coach K is pulling in over $4 mill a year! I'm a huge fan, but that seems a little excessive all things considered.

It's a good and bad thing in many ways. Good that there's investment going into sports at scu a grass roots level, and therfor encouraging involvement and competition, but bad in that there's bound to be some knock on effects of investing such large sums which could potentially be affecting other areas of education.
Having said that, no matter how much people complain, I don't think we're going to get away from such high salaries in sport. If spectators are willing to pay to watch and be entertained, then it's only right that the people doing the "entertaining" be adequately compensated.
Just my 2 cents

I have no problem with Coach K making as much as the market will bear. But I do like seeing some Universities that are able to take the considerable amount they make from basketball and football and pay for all of the other sports with those proceeds, allowing lots of other students the opportunity to play college level sports on scholarship, even if they don't play the "money" sports.

$4 million a year! Wow, I know he does a great job but I think that might be a tad too much.

Yeah, agreed. I do think education could do with an injection of capital, especially since our education system is sub par.

Just my 2 cents.
