After last spring's surge of distrust and discontent over performance pay, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders are trying again to get teachers on board for changing the way educators are hired, trained, evaluated and paid. This year's effort is dubbed the Talent Effectiveness Project.
Details will be publicly unveiled at Tuesday's school board meeting, but CMS has circulated some information sheets outlining parts of the plan. Here's the outline of the teacher working teams they're recruiting for, and here's a look at some of the measures that might be used to evaluate and pay teachers.
A lot of this sounds like what officials and teachers were working on last year. The introduction to the Talent Effectiveness Project says officials listened and learned: "The initiative was first known as Pay for Performance, but it has grown and renewed its focus after more than a year of research, discussions and input from staff members across the district."

WHAT A JOKE. They are soliciting teacher input in "focus meetings" after school hours when 80% of teachers have actual "school related volunteering activities" they already complete.

TEPid is the best CMS teachers will ever be with all of these ridiculous initiatives. I'm so glad to be out of CMS and in a district where teachers are actually allowed to teach.
I just finished watching the CMS directline youtube video of our Broad Prize win. I could not help but think about all the $100 grand plus cheerleaders in that video.How many of these cheerleaders actually spend anytime in the classroom teaching a student? All administators and teachers should have to teach at least one class or 1.5 hours per day in the classroom. We dont need more expensive cheerleaders or PR people for that matter who spend very very little time in the classroom.

Remember under current state law there must be a vote of teachers before any of this can take effect.

It is a shame we can not come together and get back to the bottom line. We want to reward the good teachers, attempt to retrain and reinspire the other teachers or help them find another occupation.
The problem is, the state law that underhandedly got pushed through. I do not see a way to continue down this path with Eric, and Tim and Attababy still involved.
The CMS ivory tower must be cleaned out before this continues.
Lastly, this process is mandated by NC accepting the race to the top funds. I am not sure how to get out of that but maybe CMS could wiggle out of being the guinea pig.
Also remember too, Judge Manning is deep into this. He wants a process to be sure the inner city kids are getting the best teachers. He does not care that the other kids get shortchanged.
Really? Student surveys? How would you like having part of your paycheck being determined by a six year old or even better an angry sixteen year old?
What i dont understand is how they forget that we had a pay for performance plan called the Star Teacher Program where your data and growth of students earned you a bonus. I used to get them, and then Gorman came and they went away. If your school exceeded your goals your school, teachers, assistants and administration recieved a bonus. Now we have nothing but longer school days, staff meetings every day and stress from scared administrators who upset about things that have nothing to do with student performance.

The administration refused to admit that they hand selected the Teacher In Residence, Sue Varga...was it because she talked like them...agreed with them??? She certainly didn't respond to a posting made available to all. She does not represent the majority of teachers in CMS. She is another paid propaganda spokesperson on the public pay roll. Why does CMS spend so much money to communicate with people when THE TRUTH would communicate itself? VOTE FOR: Keith Hurley.
The focus groups are a sham and everyone knows it, even the "group facilitators." Cynical? Maybe. When your administration has already worked in secret to change STATE LAW to deny you a voice, well, you tend not to be very trusting.
At the last minute, CMS Teachers were notified of the first meeting of the FOCUS Group meeting yesterday at AGMS. Do those in CMS Leadership miss the concept of planning that they push for classroom teachers? It appears that teachers get the planning part yet those leading the District assemble the plane while in flight. Any questions why we have sooo many crashes?
CMS is a joke! I am a graduate of the system and my wife is a teacher in the system (for 12 years). She is completely burned out because of all the BS that CMS is putting her through. All of this is emotionally draining on my wife and she will be out of here as soon as she gets another job. The pay is pitiful, the students don't care (blame the parents), the administration is a joke, the school board is an embarassment (especially if you are from here), and the benefits stink. CMS better get it's act together or the whole system will collapse. There are more and more good solid families moving out of Mecklenburg every year. I know my kids will not be educated in this pitiful system.
