In saying her critics “manufactured a blood libel,” Sarah Palin used a phrase linked to the false accusations made for centuries against Jews, often to malign them as child murderers who coveted the blood of Christian children.
Blood libel has been a central fable of anti-Semitism in which Jews have been accused of using the blood of gentile children for medicinal purposes or to mix in with matzo, or unleavened bread traditionally eaten at Passover.
In a video posted to her Facebook page early Wednesday, the 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate accused the U.S. media of inciting hatred and violence after the shooting that gravely wounded U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Palin has been criticized for marking Giffords' district with the cross hairs of a gun sight during last fall's campaign.
“But, especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible,” she said. -- Observer News Services

Score one for Sarah Palin. I mean, was this an entrance for her to show represent as the next President, at the mercy of poor innocent lives who died and one who is hanging on, thankfully? Was the announcement of Sarah Palin's proposed "targets" fall towards her as part of a plan to redeem herself as a strong runner towards Presidency? It makes you wonder.
Can anyone tell me what anonymous 9:52 said???
I hate Sarah Palin because the media tells me to. The media is always right, aren't they?
So let's do a scorecard on this posting:
Headline - inflammatory wording
Paragraph 1 - smear on Palin
Paragraph 2 - link Palin to "anti-semitism"
Paragraph 3 - link Palin to Giffords shooting
Paragraph 4 - actually quote Palin herself
For the record I voted AGAINST McCain/Palin in 2008 and if Palin runs in 2012 I will vote AGAINST her.
Well Sarah, if you stayed out of the limelight and in Alaska where you belong, non of this would be happening to you. Do us all a favor and go the hell away already!
While I'm not a fan of her's I don't for one minute believe she's responsible for what happened. the guy was a nut-case no doubt and while I'd be the first to admit that Sarah has as much chance of becoming president as I do of winning the california lottery from north carolina. Bottom line sure she's a circus act but in this case she's innocent.

And it's also come into common use as a term for falsely accusing someone else of having blood on their hands, in much the same way "witch hunt" has been used when you aren't necessarily talking about witches.
For example, Jim Geraghty has documented just a few of the uses in recent years by writers and commentators on all sides:

Anyone who fell for yet another obvious anti-Palin smear probably ought not to be criticizing *her* intelligence...
What's all this fuss about anyway? She simply responded to critics of the right. No matter what you may think of her personally, the woman has the guts to stand up for what she believes is right. More Americans should do likewise.
Thank you for the post, really useful data.
