Letter: 'Conduct unbecoming an officer'

The city of Charlotte today released former police officer Marcus Jackson's termination letter after a judge ruled the document is public record under the state's new personnel law.

Jackson's attorneys argued the letter should not be released until criminal charges are resolved, citing state law allowing material in ongoing investigations to be withheld.

But Superior Court Judge Robert Ervin disagreed.

Observer attorney Jon Buchan successfully argued that the dismissal letter is public record and not investigative material.

In the dismissal, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe cited two December 2009 incidents in which Jackson is accused of conducting traffic stops on women. Six women have accused Jackson of sexually assaulting them while he was on duty.

The police department's Human Resource Department did the CMPD and the citizens of Charlotte a great injustice by not checking the references for this officer. If there were any red flags at all he should not have been hired. Minorities have a hard enough time trusting the police and the system without something like this happening.

I agree with anonymous (Nov. 23 @ 11:38 a.m.). I happen to be a "minority" and I AM afraid of the police. Although I am a law-abiding citizen who has never been pulled over (thank you God), the thought of being stopped by police is a dreadful one. Especially because I live in NC, a state which still practices (though mostly covertly) Jim Crow.

Any officer who has issues like those Marcus Johnson has is an officer I do NOT want protecting or serving me.

I am thankful that he is now on the sidelines, hopefully forever.

The City Council did an even greater injustice when they hired Rodney Monroe....ethics and morals start at the top NOT at the bottom....

WHAT A DISGRACE! Both this dept. and this individual!! Don`t they screen people before hiring them? what about his previous infractions? How many violations of rules does it take to get fired???? Are there any sexual charges against this officer in addition to his firing?? I hope he goes to prison and gets `groped` himself!

I tbink that is great having their dirty luandry aired, like the rest of us. Hiding behind their badges thinking they are above the rest of the world, just because they are police officers. Some are predators, molesters, abusers, NO different than others. (wife Beaters)
