Foxx: Give CMS $4.7 million from speedcams


The mayoral candidate writes "now is the time to help each other as best we can," in a letter to Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools.

Charlotte City Councilman Anthony Foxx has scheduled a news conference this morning to discuss his plan to ease the school system's budget shortfall.

His idea: Send $4.7 million from Charlotte's now-defunct speed camera program to the school system.

Foxx outlined his proposal in a Friday letter to school board members and Superintendent Peter Gorman.

Foxx says in the letter he will make his recommendation at tonight's council meeting.

Some background:

The city's speed cameras were turned off in 2006 after a court decision involving red-light cameras in High Point. The N.C. Court of Appeals ruled that a provision in the state constitution requires most of the fines to be turned over to the schools; rather than raise local taxes, Charlotte turned off its cameras.

    If this has been ruled unconstitutional, then the people who received tickets should get their money back, not the schools. The schools already get more than enough money and waste it by overpaying the execs like Gorman.

    i agree 100% if he loves his job, to help the kids and commmunity, let him take a salary cut for a year or two.

    Just a quick point for the Anonymous comment at 12:15 - It was ruled unconstitutional on how the fines were used (being that 90% should go to local schools), not if cameras are legal or not. So the people that still got a ticket and paid are out of luck.

    I'm curious if Foxx's proposal will get far since they city doesn't really have the origianl money from the cameras anymore. This does bolster his resume for Mayor though.

    Gorman should definitely take a steep pay cut. Hell, every single CMS employee making over $100k should take a 15% cut and under $100k a 10% pay cut.

    Why not ? I have taken a 10% cut this year, lost all contributions to my 401k, lost a weeks vacation and am working 25% less hours to boot.

    But they expect me to keep paying taxes to pay CMS salaries. And I don't even have a kid !!!!

    At first, I thought it was a bit crazy to ask that the CMS executives re-evaluate their current salaries. Now, after having a clearer illustration of the gravity of CMS's financial situation - a pay cut/furlough is definately in line. How can you ask teachers, aids, therapists, and school admin to take furlough (or in some situations eliminate positions) without fully showing every cut has been made by the 'team' first?
    Thank you Anthony Foxx for offering SOME type of SOLUTION rather than just sitting on the side line complaining like the majority. Your leadership skills have been noted. Hopefully people will recognize you as a solid candidate with a transparent platform and core values. Charlotte could use a dose of real life politics.

    AWESOME! Maybe CMS can pay the 5 Charer schools that are owed money. They owe several charter schools Char Meck tax money for children who decided not to attend the failing CMS schools. Hey Gorman...time to finally pay the piper versus hiding behind failed Higher Court Appeal attempts! Stop wasting taxpayer money on Lawyers and pay...or go back where you came from...

    Agreed with prev. Gorman statements. I am definitely in favor of paying an executive who delivers results. But does Dr. Gorman deliver those results? He's had enough time to wrestle down those pesky segmentation and budget issues. Its time for some accountability now.
