According to a WBTV analysis of the session's audio, Commissioner Bill James asked Commissioner Vilma Leake, "Your son was a homo, really?" This came after an emotional statement by Leake about her son's death from AIDS.
According to WBTV, the conversation went this way. James's comment was barely audible:
Leake: "I did not know that in 2010 that I would be sitting here to defend … his lifestyle."
James leaned over, "Your son was a homo, really?"
Leake: "Don't make me hurt you. Don't do that to me. Don't talk to me about my son."

James went on WBT radio's Keith Larson show this morning to defend his statement.
At first, James told Larson that he was in the process of saying "homosexual," but was cut off by Leak. He changed his story after Larson played a clip of the exchange that made clear that wasn't the case.
"Look, I don't care if I said 'homo.' I don't think it changes the reality of it. Whether I said, 'is he a homo really or is he homosexual, really?' - I'm OK with either one of those…
"When she used the reason for her vote, the fact that her son had engaged in lifestyle and had died of HIV/AIDS as the reason for her vote, I was curious about what lifestyle she was talking about because usually you don't use the term 'lifestyle' to refer to a blood transfusion."

ReplyDeleteEnough is Enough Already...Vilma Leake needs to take responsibility of her actions first...she shouldn't have said anything in the first place and Bill James just happened to be the person who verbally said what everyone else was thinking and if you don't think that's true then you have been living under a rock way too long. So, Vilma spoke out of turn first and she should apologize to her colleagues including the audience for starting this firestorm in the first place. She should have thought before speaking. Then, Bill James should have thought before speaking. Firestorms can be avoided if we all just think before speaking. And, it's too bad that her son died of aids no matter how he came about being infected by it. (If she ever had a son as one comment states.) But, I don't know of anyone who would purposefully bring up a subject that sets off such hurt feelings as your child dying from any disease and in a public forum such as a gov meeting, no less.

ReplyDeleteMr. James does not seem to mind the health benefits that he enjoys. It is a well known fact that due to his inability to hold a real stable job like the rest of us - he has to obtain his benefits from the county. Seeing as county commissioners, while elected, are during office county employees he is vested in the pension system after 10 years. So while his viewpoint and voice are largely useless on the board these days he has become the biggest welfare recipient of them all.

No matter how a person dies, especailly a child, one should not make a joke of it. Bill James lives in a moral sewer. I'm glad he's not my elected representative.

Anytime Bill opens his ignorant mouth I email his vile rants to everyone in my address book and ask them to boycott these areas as well.
This means Carolina Place Mall too folks. Boycott it all ! There's not enough people living in those areas to support all of the retail and restaurants. Pull out and within a year watch them start closing doors.

I am not a Northerner, but as I read these 'hate-filled' comments and see an obvious refusal on so many peoples' part to attempt to see some situations, any situation, from a 'slightly' different angle than their own preconceived, inculcated, entrenched, one-way only, views, I understand how we, the South, are often thought of as ignorant. Ignorance is cured only by a willingness to entertain other possibilities and ways of thinking by learning from the great thinkers and humanitarians that have urged us to be fair in our approaches to life. How can so much venom be spewed from an area that has a church every 10th. mile? Churches whose members piously sit in the pews and proclaim a loving God. It sounds like few of these members are following in the footsteps of their 'loving God'.
